In Saint Catherine in South Sinai—a site sacred to the three Abrahamic religions— the “Great Transfiguration Project,” a major tourism mega project now nearing completion. The project includes the construction of an airport, a five-star hotel, and a cable car to the summit of Mount Sinai, where Moses is believed to have received the Tablets of the Law. The project presents significant risks for both the local Bedouin community—who face possible eviction and restrictions on their traditional livelihoods—and the Greek Orthodox monastery, whose lands the Egyptian government has moved to nationalise.
