According to UNHRC, in March 2023, Sudan reached the highest registration number of refugee and asylum seekers in the year with 1,144,675. South Sudanese make up the majority. Many others have fled violence and persecution in neighbouring countries, including Eritrea, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia and Chad, but also the wars in Syria and Yemen pushed people to seek safety in Sudan.
A month later in Sudan, April 2023, the civil war that has pitted the army, led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of his former deputy, General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, nicknamed "Hemedti," who rose from the Janjaweed militias that took part in the Darfur genocide in the 2000s.
According to the UNHRC, over 850,000 new arrivals have sought safety in south Sudan since April 2023. Most, (77%) are south Sudanese nationals returning home, whom fleed south Sudan before bec of the civil war there between 2013-2020. whilst the rest includes over 180,000 Sudanese refugees as well as smaller numbers of other foreign nationals. Over 80% of the new arrivals are women and kids.
