جنوب السودان 

For years, Sudan hosted one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, providing refuge for people fleeing conflict and persecution in neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, Eritrea, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Chad, Syria, and Yemen. According to UNHCR, by March 2023, more than 1.1 million refugees and asylum seekers were living in Sudan, the majority from South Sudan.
 

Just one month later, Sudan's civil war forced many of those who had once found safety there to flee again. Since April 2023, more than 850,000 people have crossed into South Sudan, most of them South Sudanese returning to a country they had previously escaped during the civil war between 2013 and 2020. More than 80% of the new arrivals are women and children.

This story follows families returning to a homeland shaped by memory, uncertainty, and the hope of rebuilding their lives once again.
